The path to wellness after bariatric surgery intertwines physical transformation with mental and emotional adjustments. The journey is rich with challenges, from weight regain after bariatric surgery to emotional eating post-surgery. This guide is here to shine a light on overcoming these obstacles with a blend of resilience, understanding, and positivity.

Let's start by discussing bariatric surgery and mental health...

1) Mental health in the post-bariatric journey.

Recovering from bariatric surgery goes beyond the physical; it deeply influences your mental health. Acknowledging the significant impact of bariatric surgery on mental health is your starting point towards comprehensive healing. Viewing any setbacks as part of your growth process is crucial for maintaining a gentle and self-compassionate approach.

2) Learning from dietary slips with kindness.

It's normal to face dietary challenges after surgery. The secret to moving past them? Treat these moments with kindness and understanding. Forgiving yourself lets you learn lessons from each experience, promoting a healing mindset that supports both recovery and forward movement.

3) Building back confidence through thoughtful actions.

Navigating the ups and downs of recovery demands a strategic approach:

  • Take time to understand what led to a dietary slip and how you can address it.
  • Set small, realistic goals that gradually restore your confidence.
  • Engage in positive self-talk to transform any negative thoughts into affirmations of your strength and progress.

4) Fostering a positive outlook with support.

Altering how you speak to yourself is key in your recovery journey. Reframing thoughts from "I've failed" to "Every experience is part of my growth" not only enhances resilience but also shifts your perspective towards optimism. Support from family, friends, or groups further strengthens this foundation, helping you view challenges as opportunities for learning and staying committed to your health goals.

5) Moving forward with self-compassion & determination.

Your post-bariatric path offers countless opportunities for self-discovery, despite the hurdles of weight regain and emotional eating. By focusing on mental health and employing strategies rooted in self-kindness and proactive self-dialogue, you're well- equipped to handle setbacks gracefully. Every step you take is a move towards total wellness, supported by a caring and resolute approach as you journey towards lasting health and happiness.

I am on the end stage of removing from knee surgery. My youngest just graduated from high school. So all my physical & mental status was focusing on those 2 things. I am 17 months p.o. letting myself slip… NOW IS THE TIME TO FOCUS ON ME AGAIN!
This article came in handy for me. Thank you
