Surviving Quarantine After Weight Loss Surgery

We are all in a place we have never been before. Everyone is in the same boat and we are all stuck at home. It is extremely difficult for everyone, but there are some things that make life at home extra hard for bariatric patients. We are all bored, which means the chances of snacking increases. This can be very dangerous for weight loss surgery patients. When we are out of our routine, it can lead to destructive behaviors. If you were going to the gym or doing any physical activity before this pandemic, chances are it has been extremely hard for you to find a new routine at home. Everyone’s mental health is also tested during this time, and as bariatric patients, we have a higher chance of having depression.

As difficult as this time is for everyone, it is important that we see the positives. There are plenty of things that we can all do to make this time easier. As a bariatric patient, you cannot forget the journey you are on right now. I know it is extremely difficult being out of your routine, but right now it is crucial that you follow the process and don’t fall off the wagon. Boredom can lead to snacking so the best thing for you to do is to stay busy. Find a new hobby, watch movies, call your friends and family. Find something to distract you when you notice your head hunger.

Do your best to eat the same way you were eating before all of this started. I know it can be challenging to find all the necessary foods right now but do your best to stay as close as possible. Keep track of your calories, protein and water intake. It is critical that you don’t overeat during this time. At the same time, you must make sure you don’t starve yourself either. Meal prep the same way you were doing before, and you will be on the path toward success.

It is also important that you get up and get moving. You might not be able to do the same workout you were doing before this quarantine, but there are still plenty of things you can do. Get on YouTube and search for easy at-home workouts. You will get so many hits and they are all very motivating. Go outside on a nice walk, making sure you keep a safe distance from everyone else. Fresh air will do your body good after being stuck in the house for so long. It is so important that you do not just lay around all day. You will not see as much weight loss if you do this.

Lastly, your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Take the time to focus on you. Relax and take a bath. Read a book. Do something that makes you happy. You have some extra time on your hands so focus some of that energy back into yourself. If you feel lonely, call your friends or visit an online support page for help. By focusing on both your mental and physical health, you will have an easier time during this difficult time that we are all facing. Be patient and follow the guidelines just as you were before all of this and we will be back to normal in no time.
