Weight Loss Transformation Story

Surgery type: Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy/Gastric Sleeve (VGS)
Surgery date: June 2016
Pre-surgery weight: 400
Current weight: 273

Here is a little bit more about Matt's WLS journey:

Hi, my name is Matt, and my entire life I struggled with obesity. When I hit the age 30 I reached 400 pounds! Knowing I was worth more than a heavy set stricken life and having a wife and two small little girls depending on me, I had to do something to get myself healthy and beat obesity!

After looking into weight loss surgery I choose to have a VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) in June of 2016. I am happy to say that since entering a weight loss surgery program and having the surgery I have lost 127 pounds! I now currently weigh 273 pounds and I feel amazing. I finally feel like the dad my kids deserve to have, one that wants to get down on the floor and play with them! without feeling out of breath and tired all the time!

MY STORY GETS EVEN BETTER! Before having weight loss surgery I searched YouTube for a male perspective and found mostly all women who talked about their weight loss surgery journey. Before I had my surgery I thought - I should document this. So I started a YouTube channel called FIGHTING 400 which follows my journey pre and post-op from DAY 1.  My channel has grown to around 3,000 subscribers in a year and I am now connecting with so many people from all over the country to sometimes the globe as a resource for both MEN and WOMEN looking into weight loss surgery!  I also created an Instagram account to post daily photos of my journey and www.fighting400.com

I can honestly say the weight loss surgery community is a strong and beautiful one! I am honored to be a part of it!

Surgery date: 12/12/2016
Pre-surgery weight: 234
Current weight: 156

Here is a little bit more about Christina's WLS journey:

Hi, my name is Christina Jewett. I had VSG on December 12,2016 so I'm about 6 months out.

I decided to have the gastric sleeve surgery done because I have a very active 3 year old son and I was not being the mom he deserved. I also am in nursing school and work in a very busy ER.

I needed my health back and all the excess weight was slowing me down big time. I am 5'2 and my highest weight was 234lbs and I am currently 156lbs so I'm down 78lbs so far!

This has been an amazing journey so far and I can't wait to see how far it takes me!

Here is a little bit more about Alicia's WLS journey:

My name is Alicia, but most people know me as Msbeautifulalicia on YouTube.

I have always felt unloved and unwanted and especially when I reached my all time high of 560 pounds. I was ready to die - actually I used to pray every night the I could be rid of this pain. Then in 2013 I was given an amazing gift of having Gastric Bypass!

Since then, I have worked hard to meet my weight loss goals. I struggled at times, but it has been so worth it. My weight today is 400lbs I'm still pushing forward to get to my goals.

My hope is to help others realize anything is possible and never give up. Find what works for you and reach out to others. I was given the gift of life and for that I will be forever grateful.

Weight Loss Transformation Story

Surgery type: RNY/Gastric Bypass
Surgery date: 12/28/2015
Pre-surgery weight: 285
Post-surgery weight: 268
Current weight: 122

Here is a little bit more about Amber's WLS journey:

My name is Amber, I am 32 years old from Temecula, CA. I have struggled with my weight most of my life and tried every diet out on the market. Nothing worked.

I actually almost died in the hospital after my surgery. I got pneumonia in the hospital and was in the hospital for over 3 weeks. I was on a ventilator for a week. Got kidney failure which required two rounds of dialysis. My kidneys were normal before this. It was the scariest time of my life, but I came through.

Having RNY/Gastric Bypass saved my life. Now I feel incredible! I feel younger, no pains and can do the littlest tasks with ease, like tying my shoes.  If I had to, I would do it all again just to feel this amazing!

Thanks BariMelts for letting me share my story!

Which Vitamins Should I Take After Weight Loss Surgery? June 15 2017, 0 Comments

Weight loss surgery is a major event in any patient’s weight-loss journey, and it is often seen as a new beginning. WLS patients look forward to having a new body, a new diet and a new outlook on life! It is a big change, but surprisingly many Bariatric patients aren’t aware of what is actually required of them after surgery.

Not too long ago, our BariMelts team received a call from a Bariatric patient who said she was planning to have a weight loss procedure done in the coming months. Although her surgery date was far in the future, she was very eager to get everything she would need once her WLS was complete.

This particular patient already knew she would be on a special diet post-op. She also knew that she needed to take additional supplements. However, she wasn’t quite sure what surgery she was going to have yet and was hoping to get the correct vitamins in advance.

But did you know that type of Bariatric vitamins you should take after surgery actually vary by procedure?

It’s true.

The type of weight loss procedure you have will decide what your diet will be for the rest of your life, and that includes the type and amount of supplemental vitamins you will need. It is important to know exactly which vitamins are right for you based on your type of weight loss surgery so your new body gets the right amount of nutrients.

The most common weight loss surgeries are:

  • Roux-en-Y - Gastric Bypass
  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding  - LapBand
  • Vertical sleeve gastrectomy - VGS
  • Duodenal switch with biliopancreatic diversion - DS

Typically, your daily supplemental regimen to follow for the rest of your life includes:

These Bariatric-friendly vitamins help your body function at its full potential and are necessary due to the changes to your digestive system. Here are the typical vitamins you will need by procedure:

Gastric Sleeve

  • Multivitamin
  • Calcium Citrate
  • Iron
  • Vitamin C
  • Biotin
  • B12 Plus

Gastric Bypass

  • Multivitamin
  • Calcium Citrate
  • Iron
  • Vitamin C
  • Biotin
  • B12 Plus

Lapband

  • Multivitamin
  • Calcium Citrate
  • Iron
  • Vitamin C

It is also important to remember the following rules when taking your Bariatric supplements:

  • Do not take Iron and Calcium at the same time
  • Do not take fiber products with your supplements
  • Do not take vitamins on an empty stomach

No matter which procedure you have, it is essential for bariatric surgery patients to have their vitamin and mineral levels checked regularly after surgery.

Always keep in mind that after going through WLS, your body needs special care. That includes eating the right healthy foods, exercising regularly and taking your supplemental vitamins every day. Good aftercare and moderate lifestyle changes can give wonderful long-term results for health and weight!

5 Ways to Mentally Overcome Weight Gain After Bariatric Surgery June 15 2017, 0 Comments

Because of the nature of gastric bypass surgery, there is a high probability of weight gain immediately after the procedure, although it is not guaranteed. The key to getting to your ultimate weight loss goals is a healthy diet, regular supplements and consistent exercise. But sometimes you may get discouraged along the way, or even gain back a few pounds. And this can really throw your progress off!

Here are a few things that you can do in order to prepare your mental state for some of the weight gain after you undergo surgery:

    1. Make sure that you understand the medical reasons that you regain some of the weight.

Fast weight gain is the way that the body naturally deals with the shock of losing so much weight at one time. Because surgery is unnatural, the body will attempt to compensate in the only way that it knows how. You will begin to retain a great deal of fat and produce weight gaining hormones as your body responds to the shock.

    2. Realize that the weight loss that you will finally achieve will include this weight gain.

If you readjust your mind to think in terms of average overall weight loss rather than weight loss immediately after the surgery, you will be much more mentally prepared to deal with the weight gain.

    3. Stay away from foods that are known to increase the fat producing and fat retaining hormones that will naturally be occurring in your body.

It may be hard to immediately change your diet just because you have had a surgery. However, this is one of the ways in which you can help yourself to mentally overcome the shock. Stay away from comfort foods. Simply do not purchase them when you go to the grocery store.

    4. Be clear of alcohol and drugs after your surgery.

Not only do alcohol and drugs further stress the body after the surgery, but they both have fat retaining hormones that will increase your weight gain as well.

    5. Be sure that you have a support system of family and friends around you.

There is no reason that you have to take on this journey alone. Be sure that your friends and family are around you to help keep you on the straight and narrow. Let them know that most of the battle will be psychological so that they can help you when your mental state diverges.

3 Reasons Why Bariatric Support Groups are Necessary Post-Op June 13 2017, 0 Comments

Prior to bariatric surgery, there are many questions about the procedure itself and the days leading up to the procedure. While doctors and dietitians may have tried to prepare you for the days, weeks and months after surgery, it probably was not a priority.

The patient knows he or she will have to exercise and eat healthy meals, but the reality can be scary and confusing. Surrounding yourself with people who have been in the same situation and offer their support will be extremely beneficial to your success!

    The Support Itself

In support groups, there are people at every stage of the journey from pre-surgery patients to those who have been maintaining their weight loss for years. It’s great to know you’re not alone, and that someone understands the daily problems and battles. Family and friends might be supportive, but unless they’ve had the surgery, they can’t know exactly what you’re going through on a daily basis. The support group offers an understanding shoulder, and can answer many questions that a person may have on their journey of weight loss.

    Milestones and Celebrations

Each weight loss hurdle is a reason to celebrate and having people to celebrate with makes your achievement feel that much grander. Support groups help each other shine, motivate, and inspire.

    Dedication

When so many people are genuinely cheering for your success, it makes you feel as if you’re not alone. Being alone when you’re struggling with a long, hard road can be depressing and might influence your weight loss. A group of people who are concerned about your welfare and as delighted as you are by your successes will make it easier to remain dedicated, especially during particularly trying days or weeks.

The support group after surgery is one of the most important parts of the weight loss journey. You’ll be energized by the support of people who understand, and you can share in their triumphs too.

Why You Need Calcium After Weight Loss Surgery June 09 2017, 0 Comments

If you've recently had weight loss surgery you are experiencing a major physical change. Not only does your body look different from the outside, but it acts differently on the inside as well. Due to the changes that have been made to the digestive system, weight loss surgery patients are at a risk for challenges with absorbing specific nutrients, including calcium.

In addition to building our bones and keeping them heathy, Calcium also plays a key role in weight regulation and can give you a weight loss edge!

A good Calcium supplement after weight loss should contain:

Here are few more reasons why Calcium consumption after WLS is so important.

Your Body No Longer Absorbs Nutrients As Easily

When you undergo weight loss surgery, there are changes made to your digestive systems that effect your ability to absorb certain nutrients. Bariatric surgery patients and other WLS patients are at particular risk for challenges with specific absorption, particularly calcium and vitamin D.

Massive Weight Loss Effects Your Bone Density

Bariatric and other weight loss surgeries may increase bone turnover and loss of bone mass in patients. This is partly due to massive change in weight alone. Because of this fact, Calcium is vital for WLS patients, as they have a high risk for long-term challenges with bone health. When your body does not get enough calcium from food and supplements, it "borrows" the calcium it needs from your bones. Over time, this can cause decrease bone health. Therefore, it is critical that bariatric patients get adequate calcium as part of their regular diet to reduce the risk of deficiencies and bone loss.

Low Calcium Intake Contributes To Weight Gain

Believe it or not, low calcium intake is considered a contributing factor to obesity and associated co-morbidities such as hypertension. After undergoing WLS, the goal is to continue to lose pounds until you reach a healthier weight. Then the goal is to maintain it with proper nutrition and exercise. The last thing a WLS patient wants is to gain back those pounds, and by taking calcium regularly that can be avoided. Having a healthy calcium intake allows the body to facilitate the excretion of fecal fat and may help increase core body temperature.
