I know I was shocked to see how much the first thing I thought about when I woke up in the morning and the last thing I thought about when I went to bed was about food. It was bad. When food was taken away, I realized how so much of my eating disorder was due to boredom. So, it was time to find a new hobby!
Whether you decide to take up a new sport, or go for crocheting, I highly recommend that you find a new hobby, especially if you are just now starting out your journey. When food is taken away, you will be frustrated. You have probably spent most of your life revolving everything around what you were going to eat. The best thing to do when you feel frustrated is to keep your mind busy. You do not want to obsess so much over food that you end up giving in and going for unhealthy foods. By finding a new hobby, you will learn to let go of food and focus on other things that make you happy.
I remember I used to think that food was the only thing that really made me happy. It took me years to let go and realize there were other things out there that could bring me more joy than a chocolate chip cookie could. I started blogging because it made me happy, and it helped me sort through my emotions. If blogging is not your thing, that’s ok. Find something you are passionate about. I would highly recommend that one of your new hobbies be something active, that way it will promote an even healthier lifestyle. Whatever you choose to do, focus your energy on it instead of obsessing over the food you can no longer eat. It will help pass the time in the early days and then over time you will learn to love your new lifestyle. It will be challenging at first, but it will be worth it.
You will be amazed once you start putting your energy into something else just how unhappy you really were when you just focused on food. New hobbies can bring a new sense of self, which is amazing for your mental health after weight loss surgery. This is a new you. Take advantage of this time in your life and find out who you really are.
