Handling the Stress of Excessive Compliments After Extreme Weight Loss

One of the many positive things that come with weight loss surgery is how fast you lose weight. From this extreme weight loss, you are more than likely going to get a lot of attention. You will soon start receiving compliments and people will notice the changes in your body. This is a very exciting feeling, but it can also be a little overwhelming if you aren’t used to it.

When you spend most of your life overweight, you get used to the negative attention. I remember I used to be called names by complete strangers. Fat shaming is a real thing and it is extremely painful. It caused a lot of anxiety for me whenever I would go somewhere. I was always thinking I was going to be embarrassed by a stranger. So, to go from this to being noticed in a positive light, is very strange. It took me time to accept this. I remember the first time I got hit on by a guy. I was in London for a work trip and he came up to me and gave me a compliment. I remember feeling like he was tricking me. I thought in my head “there is no way he is attracted to me.” It is pretty sad that I was so conditioned to being treated badly in public, that I couldn’t comprehend that someone was actually giving me a genuine compliment.

I also remember that I was really overwhelmed with compliments from my friends and family. I felt that it put a lot of pressure on me to succeed and it gave me anxiety at times. If you are in this same situation, you are not alone. It takes time to learn your new body and even longer to accept the attention you are going to get from society. Just remember that people are proud of you and they want to express that to you through compliments. If it causes too much stress, talk to them about it. Tell them that you appreciate the kind words but you don’t want a lot of attention about it. Be proud of yourself and do what you need to do to stay on track. YOU GOT THIS!
