Summer is here, and it’s time to embrace the warmth, sunshine, and most importantly, the joy of spending quality time with your family and friends. As someone who has undergone bariatric surgery, I know firsthand how transformative this journey can be. The summer months offer a fantastic opportunity to explore new activities, make lasting memories, and celebrate your newfound health and mobility. Here are some fun, family-friendly activities that will help you enjoy the season to the fullest!

1) Picnics in the park.

There's nothing quite like a picnic to enjoy the beauty of nature while bonding with your loved ones. Pack a basket with healthy snacks, bring a cozy blanket, and head to your favorite park. Enjoying a meal outdoors can be a refreshing change of pace while also providing some much-needed vitamin D. Focus on the conversations and laughter and take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come. Remember to stay hydrated, bring your vitamins, and apply plenty of sunblock!

2) Exploring aquariums.

Aquariums are fantastic for all ages and offer an indoor escape from the summer heat. Walking through the exhibits (mindlessly getting your steps in!), marveling at the diverse marine life, and learning new things together can be both educational and relaxing. Plus, it’s a great way to stay active without overexerting yourself. If you’re mobility-challenged, many aquariums offer accessibility features like wheelchairs and elevators.

3) Museum adventures.

Museums are another excellent indoor activity. Whether you're into art, history, or science, there's something for everyone. The best part? Many museums offer interactive exhibits that are perfect for keeping the little ones entertained. Walking through the halls of a museum can be a gentle way to get some exercise and appreciate the culture and knowledge around you while staying cool in the air conditioning during hot summer months.

4) Enjoying performing arts.

Summer is a prime time for both indoor and outdoor concerts, theater performances, and festivals. Look for local events in your area and bring your family along for a night of entertainment. Many venues offer seating accommodations for those who need them, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the show comfortably.

5) Nature walks & hikes.

Take advantage of the beautiful weather by exploring local trails and nature reserves. Start with shorter, less strenuous hikes and gradually work your way up to more challenging trails as your endurance improves. Nature walks are a fantastic way to stay active and experience the great outdoors with your family. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water, snacks, and sunblock to keep everyone happy and healthy.

6) Fun at the beach.

A day at the beach is always a hit with families. Whether you’re building sandcastles, swimming, or simply lounging under an umbrella, the beach offers endless fun. After bariatric surgery, you might find you have more energy to engage in these activities. Remember to stay hydrated, reapply sunblock regularly, and bring your snacks and vitamins along to keep up with your nutritional needs.

7) Adaptive sports & activities.

For those who are mobility-challenged, there are plenty of adaptive sports and activities designed to include everyone. Look into local programs offering adaptive kayaking, cycling, or even yoga. These activities are tailored to various ability levels and ensure that everyone can participate and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.

8) Embrace the moments.

The essence of these activities is to be present in the moment with the people you love, enjoying the experiences and making memories together. Notice the things you can do now that you couldn’t do before your surgery. Celebrate the victories, big and small, and cherish the joy of being active and involved in your loved ones' lives.

This summer, let’s focus on the joy of movement, the beauty of the world around us, and the connections we have with our families. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and most importantly, have fun!

9) Bariatric pro tips.

  • Stay hydrated: Always carry a water bottle and remind your family to drink plenty of water.
  • Pack bariatric-friendly meals & snacks: Be sure to bring along protein-packed, nutritionally dense meals and snacks to stay on track with your goals while you have fun in the sun!
  • Bring your vitamins: Ensure you keep up with your nutritional needs by bringing your vitamins along.
  • Use sunblock: Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays by applying sunblock generously and frequently.

Here’s to a summer filled with fun, family, and newfound freedoms! Enjoy every moment and make the most of this wonderful season.
