Foods Rich in Vitamin B by BariMelts
Vitamin B is one of the most common deficiencies after weight loss surgery. As a weight loss surgery patient, you must educate yourself on the foods that are rich in vitamin b to prevent serious deficiencies. Folate, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 are some of the most important of the B vitamins. Here is a list of foods that are rich in these vitamins that you should incorporate in your diet after bariatric surgery:
Folate
Foods that are rich in folate include: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, breakfast cereals, and fortified grains.
B6
Foods that are rich in vitamin B6 include: fortified cereals, beans, poultry, fish, and some fruits and vegetables (dark leafy greens, papayas, oranges, and cantaloupe).
B12
Foods that are rich in vitamin B12 include: eggs, milk, cheese, milk products, nutritional yeast, meat, fish, shellfish and poultry. Some soy-based meat substitutes are also fortified with vitamin b12.
Some of my favorite foods that are rich in vitamin B are cottage cheese, shrimp, and swiss cheese. Swiss cheese has the most vitamin b12 of all the cheeses. Pair it with a piece of fruit and it’s the perfect snack! I also love using nutritional yeast on popcorn because it reminds me of parmesan cheese. You have to be careful because popcorn can be a slider food after weight loss surgery, but if you choose a lighter brand and add nutritional yeast, it’s a great choice.
In addition to these healthy foods that are rich in vitamin B, always remember to take a multivitamin that includes these 3 B vitamins. They are so critical after weight loss surgery and since we aren’t able to eat much after surgery, it’s important that you make up for that through a daily supplement. Make sure you are always choosing healthy foods and staying on top of your vitamins. If you do this, you will be on the right path towards a healthier you!
